"Short Memory Loss"
" I think UltraRunners must have a very poor memory or no one would do another race. You tend to forget the pain and misery and only remember the thrill of accomplishment. Sometimes you even welcome the pain because it causes you to overcome your weaknesses and become a little stronger each time." ~ Bethany Hunter (UltraRunner)
Well folks, two weeks after the McNaughton 50 miler, I'm still having some ankle issues that is not going away anytime soon.
The Ultra race did a little dance on my ankle.
So Ultra training plan B, C, and D is going into effect this week. Time on the boring elliptical trainer and StairMaster. I have less than 2 weeks to bring myself to the starting line of my second 50 mile UltraMarathon in four weeks.
Hmmm, what to do?
1) Do I show up?
2) Do I D.N.S.
3) Do I drop down to the 50k?
So I guess the decision for me for now is going to behind door #1. I think I have enough fitness to be able to make it all the way. I guess trying to do Half-Ass of something is better than Half-Ass of nothing. That's my thought anyway.
Do I run the risk of further injury? Maybe or Maybe not. Proceed with caution, I've been told.
It's just 10 miles than repeat 5 times. Right? For me it is more of a scouting mission or planting the seed for maybe next year's run of the Kettle 100. Plus I really wanted to wear my new trial running hat that appeared on my door step one fine day.
On the IM training front, a semi-solid full fledged training week minus the running :( A second straight week of outdoor bike rides (40 & 50 miles over the weekend, it's a start) and two flat tires. A flat tire for the second straight week as well. Some days I think I would rather be running.

Nice layout - the pictures look really good.
Listen to what your ankle is telling you and go from there. You'll have plenty of time to race if you rest when you are supposed to rest.
Thanks for all your help from training - setting up the blog :)
Yikes! Good luck with that ankle! Take it easy. You've got a long season ahead of you. And yeah. Running is so much less high maintainance.
I never gave birth to a child.
But your initial quote on this post reminded me of testimonies of women giving birth: you forget the physical pain afterwards. Your are willing to shoulder the pain again, for the miracle of another life.
We run for life.
So let's see - you're torn between running a 12 hour event that may cause further damage to your ankle, or training for 14 hour event (IM) that is too tame...
You're a sick bastard.
That's why I love you so much!!
See you Sunday for the Century?
I love your new masthead - great pics!!
It seems you have some decisions to make. I think it all depends on where your personal priorities are at.
Whatever you decide, you have blog friends in your corner to cheer you on. :)
"Some days I think I would rather be running." Huge smile from this corner...
Take care of that ankle!!
I feel for you Dennis..I haven't been running for nearly a month. Feels like I lost a friend! Laying off is hard but seems for me to be the trick for long term fitness.
Keep up the good work!
You are crazy!!!
BTW - the new pictures are nice. Is the one from the Muddy Buddy? Why are you not down in the mud? :-) Love that race!! I've done it 3 times.
I'd say listen to your body as well. Good luck with your ankle.
I love your viewpoint of "It's just 10 miles than repeat 5 times. " :) I'll have to remember that on my next 50 mile BIKE. :)
PS - I like your new look! Nice visual for Martial Artist to Tri-Guy, Ironman, etc.
As someone who spent an entire summer on crutches because she risked running with an injury, I'd advise to get the ankle checked out first and then decide if you are still capable of a half-ass or better. If it's your Achilles, definitely don't do it. Once that muscle tears, you're done.
And I too love the new look. Tres coolio.
