"Tell me something I don't know"
I finally went to go see the doctor today to take a look at my ankle today. Tell the doc it hurts here and get inflammation here.
Doc ~ It's probably Achilles Tendinitis, that is my diagnosis.
Bubba ~ but Doc it hurts more here.
Doc ~ Okay change my diagnosis to a "Ankle Sprain".
Bubba ~ worried about a stress fracture.
Doc ~ Okay, you can get an X-ray, if it still hurts in two weeks, get a follow up X-ray to see if there really is a stress fracture. For now "R.I.C.E. ~ rest, ice, compression, and elevation." Start running slowly when it does not hurt anymore.
Okay, I knew all of this before I saw her. Now, Please tell me something I don't know. OHH, BROTHER!!
So that is my current running status. But not depressed about it. Really what can I do about it. What's done is done!
I'm determined not to just sit on the coach and eat all of my favorite cheese danishes. Not a bad idea though. So more bike sessions, stair master, and the dreaded elliptical trainer. It actually does not hurt when I do that stuff. But after one week into it, it is starting to drive me a little crazy.
I'm still hopeful to show up at the starting line on April 12Th for my 1st 100 miler. At least give it a shot anyway.
"But Whatever Happens, I Will RUN." ~ 2 Samuel 18:23
If not, plan B will take into effect, and just do the 50 mile option, tackle some other 100 miler in the area in June.. The Kettle Moraine 100 or Mohican 100 might be the plan B option for now.
But at least I found this killer treadmill at my health club. The Nordic Track incline trainer, this gadget provides an 0% to 50% incline range. I actually got up to walking 45% before I had to hold on the something. Dang cool machine.

Yikes. If it's truly achilles tendonitis, you are supposed to not run for weeks, possibly a month or more depending on the severity. And if it's a stress fracture, well, you know it's at least six weeks of no running, right? I just got over a stubborn case of achilles tendonitis. I didn't listen to people and started running on it while it still hurt. That caused the achilles to develop micro-tears. Very painful. I was out for four months. FOUR MONTHS!
All that said, a doctor that seems to change the diagnosis on the fly? Maybe you need a second opinion.
Also,...
The stairmaster and elliptical aggravated my ankle injury. You might consider concentrating on the bike and a rowing machine, if they have one. It stretches the calves and soleus muscles to aid the achilles.
Awwwhhh man, bumma! You're right though, what can you do? Keep doing what doesn't hurt, I suppose (and yes still eat those cheese danishes :P. So funny that you bring it up because I'm snacking on one as we speak :P)
That machine looks like a torture device! LMAO!
Holy COw that machine looks like a killer!!! What will they come up with next?
great that you have found other workout options. your doctor sounds..... lost!!!
Love the scripture!
Wait - you can talk your MD into a different diagnosis? Doesn't she have an x-ray or MRI machine?
Good luck with the recovery, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you making the April race.
Where do you workout? Lifetime Fitness by Orland Park?
Sorry to hear about the diagnosis. I hope it gets better sooner than later. There are plenty of 100 milers out there, but I understand the frustration of being thrown off schedule. Hang in there and try to stay away from the danishes. They are good!
hope it's just a sprain!
Let me know if you decide to do mohican. I may pace a friend there or work an aid station if I have that weekend free.
Hey I just saw Spirit of the Marathon last night. Deena Kastor was in the pool running. Just a thought.
I know you'll be back to the trails and streets in no time.
I'm praying.
If not this 100, another 100 will come your way. Hope it gets better soon!
bubba..
its funny how you could talk the doc into a changing diagnosis..
sorry its put a little damper on training...
that machine looks like torture!!! where can I fiind one..haha
someday we'll run with the bulls
sorry about your injury :-( I really like water jogging-it's boring but it's keeping my legs strong and it's good cardio. plus the water is soothing to inflammation. my prayers are with you for a speedy recovery
If you work in Chicago or live close enough, Dr. Weber at Rush is awesome! She is a runner, too.
The Dr. thing would piss me off. I am lucky to have a really good doc.
I have heard good things about Kettle Moraine.
That tread mill looks awesome!
Wow....good attitude. RICE up, and see how it all goes! Best of luck.
I just had a foot injury. My doctor just asked me to point to where it hurt and I showed him and he said, "Yup, you have a bone spur. You need an xray, physical therapy, steriod shots, trigger point shots, and you can't workout for 6 weeks."
Here's how the rest of the conversation went:
Me: You didn't even touch my foot.
Him: I know, but I know it's a bone spur from what you said.
Me: I'm not getting steriod shots
Him: That's fine.
Me: As far as working out. Can I swim, do the elliptical, recumbant bike?
Him: Oh yeah, those are fine.
Me: I think I am going to follow up with my chriopractor
Him: Suit yourself.
What a joke. The pain is completely gone. My chiropractor massaged it out and gave me an ankle brace to where while I work out. Doctors can be such a pain. Sorry about your multi diagnosis'. Hang in there and do what you can.
I'm also in Chicagoland. Northwest suburbs.
That maching is killer. I want one. :-)
Good luck with everything.
